Pete says there's been some awesome weather at his place lately, so its time for another visit.
March 7th & 8th.
Ask an adult to mark it into your busy social calendar.

If you are planing on winning STINGFEST, this could be the chance to practice the task and get an unfair advantage over the losers.

If you don't own a Sting, this is the chance to make up for being excluded at "THE FEST".

If your name is Dustan you must attend for SAFETY reasons.

Be safe...Be there.

Check here for weather related issues as we get closer (timewise closer).

Subject: Still Lumpy at Dico on Monday
Posted: Tue Feb 17, 2009 7:58 pm (GMT 9)
Topic Replies: 1

It was still lumpy at Dicko on Tuesday, although between midday and 1:30 the strength backed-off a few knots and made for good flying. Other than that today's conditions looked almost identical to yesterday's except maybe slightly less wind. It started out a little left of Dixon launch and gradually moved around slightly to the right. If it was lighter it could have been a very good day.

20 knots made the top 3rd of the cliff and above the nicest place to be. Like Allan said it was best avoiding the lower section of the lift band especially when flying something higher performance. I relaunched after landing up the hill at Merewether and got worked in the lower part of the east face and Hickson Street. The strength compressed the airflow down low and turned it into a lot of turbuence and a lot less lift. It took two bumpy passes of getting turned and yawed around in chunky air before bouncing up into the laminar layer that was flowing over the crapy stuff below.

Laps were 'on' during the 90 minute window, including Leggie Point, and just a 'rebounding' track off Smelters got you there at cliff height without the usual Gun Club stopover. From there Dudley looked possible but I had to go further to get more of an idea. I piked-out just short of the carpark and did a 'uee' back to the safety of Leggie Point. It would have been a fine line to make the Magic Bowl from the Crewcut. The wind lines suggested a very headwind push so altitude over the beach just before turning east toward crewcut was critical. No points for woosing out but a huge area of rain now in Stockton Bight and drifting south made a land-out-without-retrieve too inconvenient a possibilty. In hindsight I wish I had a go. Carpe diem ya mug!

I started the stopwatch from Fort Scratchly and got an average speed to Leggie of about 35kph. The run back into town was a bit faster. A tailwind with the glider in top gear makes a fly by the Mirvac cranes look neat. It is unusual to be so high with a stationary reference point so close. The strobe flashing away on top of the crane passes-by surprisingly fast and gives a good impresion of speed, overriding the typical impression of slow drift of land and beach a couple of hundred feet below.

The cobwebs were almost dusted when that 'pitter patter' began on the topsurface. Slowly but surely the raindrops got bigger, heavier, and louder, and eventually there was enough beading on the leading edge to start messing with the stall speed. It was time land.

A shallow left hand circuit into Dixon Park revealed the premature stall lurking a few knots away so the airspeed remained at a higher/healthy level. I kept an arm full of rope 'on' and maintained a longer and a faster than normal straight-in approach. All stayed predictable down into ground effect. The airspeed slowed to a running pace and I continued to bleed it off, curious to see where the A-frame would start to push back. It got about halfway to a full flare when the glider said 'sorry, no more, start running'. Five steps later I was walking with the glider to shelter behind the canteen.

Bugger about packing up in the wet but in the grand scheme it's a small price for 90 minutes of elusive airtime.

First chance I have had to get the Sting 3 to Dixon. By the time I got there (6PM) the others had packed up and gone for the day, Harry had just landed and JOD was just enjoying some air. When I was set up and ready JOD was on back and came over to offer a steadying influence for my wires -thanks JOD!
Launch was interesting getting through the rotor. In the air the blustery SE was still in the 23 - 28 knot range. I found the handling of the Sting 3 required more work than the Sting 2 in the bumpy and lumpy conditions. I tried about 50% vg but found that although I had better head wind penetration with less sink, the quick response to counter the turbulence suffered. I had best results with no VG. Mild bar pressure was required to maintain position into the wind.
The smoother air from above 50 AGL which JOD flew in did not last long and for most of the hour I was in the air it was somewhat turbulent. Down closer to the cliff was not a good place as the bumps in the air gave sudden height variations both up and down. All in all I found the Sting 3 to handle the conditions very well but this is certainly a different glider to the Sting 2 and definitely a big step away from the Fun.

Hi flyers,

I trust all you flyers still with partners or potential partners stayed at home on Saturday for Valentines day. What a huge sacrifice, after all there is nothing better than flying here in the mountains with zero visibility, cold wind and rain (5deg. totally invigorating). Not only did I stay home, I even went as far as killing a chook, lighting the stove and having it in the oven when the wife got home from work.
Romantic ??? I thought so.

Ed and Liz spent quality time together on Valentines day putting together a bit of footage of the last Forbes trip. Thanks for your dedication to the sport and sharing the love of flying.
We can check it out on www.TheBombout.com

Last Forbes was not looking good on the forecast and only looked worse the closer we got as can be seen on thebomout, but for those that persisted it payed of with some great late afternoon flights both Sat. and Sun. Guy was still averaging 3m/sec to 12000' at 7.00pm on Sunday.

Next weekend 21-22nd weather permitting, will you be at Forbes or will this be you ???????????

Steve.

Hi Flyer's,
Next weekend 7th/8th we have a lot of interest for the Forbes aerotow fun fly, any further interest will require a second tow pilot, so if you have not let me know of your intention to attend please do so as I have a second Dragon Fly and tow pilot on standby.

With the weather looking so good and some excellent XC flights being put in, The Dusty Demons just can't get enough. They have set another Forbes tow weekend to be held on the 21st/22nd Feb.
If you would like to join in the fun of XC flying with a group of the most dedicated in-land fun flyers in Australia please let me know.

For more info on the Dusty Demons and what they have been up to check out www.thebombout.com This is a great site with some excellent flight and trip reports, though it is not always up to date due to flying commitment's.
